The guided tour and what its price covers
The headline price on the guided bus tour is from 311 USD per person, quoted in USD because the booking platform sells it that way. For that money you get an air-conditioned bus for the full 11 hours, a live English speaking guide, admission to Tvindefossen, admission to the Stegastein Lookout and a Naeroyfjord cruise ticket. The operator lists the tour as needing good weather or a refund or reschedule, and as needing a minimum number of travellers to run. Children under 4 are not allowed on board.
Two costs sit outside that figure and you should budget for them. Food and drink at every stop are excluded, and alcohol may not be carried in the vehicle. The meeting point is outside the Tourist Information in Bergen at 07:50 for an 08:00 start, so an early breakfast or a packed lunch is your own arrangement. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before departure with a full refund, which matters if you are weighing the tour against a self booked train and boat combination.
Rival tours and how their prices differ
Three competing products show how wide the range runs. A UNESCO branded fjord cruise with Flam and Stegastein starts from 309 USD, runs 12 hours, holds a 4.74 rating and has 1,127 reviews. A tour combining the Flam Railway, Stegastein viewpoint and a fjord cruise starts from 519 USD over 11 hours with a 4.67 rating from 28 reviews. A private day tour covering the Flam Railway and fjord cruise starts from 1,036 USD and runs 10 hours.
The gap between 309 USD and 1,036 USD is not a gap in scenery. It is a gap in format. The cheapest products fill a coach and share a guide; the private product puts a vehicle and driver at your disposal for the day. The middle option charges more than the coach tours because a Flam Railway seat is included rather than sold separately.
The Naeroyfjord narrows to 250 metres here, which is the stretch every one of these routes is trying to reach.
Doing it by train via Myrdal
The rail route splits into two legs. Vy runs the Bergen Line from Bergen to Myrdal, where you change onto the Flam Railway for the run down to Flam. A through ticket booked to Flam includes the Flam Railway leg, so you do not buy twice. Secondary sources quote the Bergen to Flam journey at from about 779 NOK each way [2], and those figures differ because they measure different tickets. Check vy.no for the fare on your date.
The fare structure is where the savings live. Vy's cheap advance fare, called Lowfare, is released up to 90 days ahead, is tied to one departure, and cannot be refunded or changed [2]. It rises as seats sell, climbing toward a walk up fare several times higher. The journey takes about 2h48 to 4h30 depending on the connection at Myrdal, with roughly four departures a day.
The Flam Railway as a separate ticket
If you build the trip yourself, the Flam Railway from Myrdal to Flam is priced on its own. A one way ticket starts from about 430 NOK in low season and rises to about 510 NOK in high season. A return starts from about 620 NOK in low season and up to about 730 NOK in high season. High season is mainly June to August, spilling into May and September.
Children aged 6 to 17 pay a reduced fare and under 6s travel free. Interrail and Eurail holders get 30 percent off single tickets, but the discount must be bought at a staffed station. Round trips become bookable 120 days ahead, which is earlier than the Lowfare window on the main line and is worth diarising if your dates are fixed.
11 hours
The guided bus tour runs 11 hours door to door, which covers the bus, the Naeroyfjord cruise, Tvindefossen and the Stegastein Lookout in one day.
The Norled express boat option
Norled runs a Sognefjord express boat directly between Bergen and Flam, and it is the simplest single ticket on the route. Adults pay from 1,295 NOK one way [1]. Children aged 6 to 17 and seniors aged 67 and over pay from 648 NOK, students aged 18 to 29 pay from 777 NOK, and under 6s travel free [1]. It departs from Strandkaiterminalen in Bergen.
The trade off is time and frequency. The crossing takes 5.5 hours one way, with one sailing a day each way, leaving Bergen at 08:00 and Flam at 15:30, and the service runs April to October [1]. That is a long day on the water and it leaves no room for a same day return without an overnight. For a one way transfer with the fjord as the attraction rather than the transport, it is hard to beat.
Driving yourself and the tunnel warning
By road the distance is about 166 km and the drive takes about 2h32 on the E16 to Voss and then road 7 into Flam [3]. Tolls for the route come in under 100 NOK [3]. The Laerdal Tunnel is free to use and is the longest road tunnel in the world at 24.5 km, with an 80 km/h limit and no overtaking [3].
There is a serious caveat. From autumn 2026 to autumn 2028 the Laerdal Tunnel closes to traffic between 18:00 and 06:00 [3]. Anyone planning an early start or a late return on that corridor needs to plan around the closure window or take a different road. Driving also removes the guide, the cruise ticket and the Stegastein admission from your day unless you buy them separately, so the low fuel and toll figure is not the whole Bergen to Flam cost.
What the same trip costs by each route
Vy Lowfare, released 90 days ahead. A through ticket carries the Flam Railway leg.
5.5 hours on the water, one sailing a day, April to October.
A return day with the Naeroyfjord cruise, the Stegastein Lookout and Tvindefossen. The two above are one-way fares only.
Driving is the fourth option and does not belong on this scale: tolls come in under 100 NOK, but fuel and the car are on top. Norwegian fares converted at the European Central Bank rate of 11 September 2026.
Coaches, city tickets and comparing the total
Express coaches on the route are run by Vy Buss and Nor-Way Bussekspress, with fares from about 21 EUR. Note that Skyss city tickets are not valid on these express coaches, and a Skyss single within Bergen starts from 51 NOK and lasts 60 minutes. Buying the wrong ticket is an easy mistake for a visitor who assumes one card covers everything.
Set against each other, the guided tour at from 311 USD buys a fixed 11 hour day with a guide and no planning. The train via Myrdal at from 779 NOK plus the Flam Railway at from about 430 NOK is the cheapest way to travel the corridor if you book early and accept that you arrange your own cruise and viewpoints. The Norled boat at from 1,295 NOK one way is the most expensive single leg but the least complicated. Whichever you choose, the Bergen to Flam cruise time on the water is the part most people underestimate, so read the schedule before you commit to a same day return.
Work out your own total
Transport only. The guided day already includes the cruise, Stegastein and Tvindefossen; on the other two you buy those separately.
When to book, and what closes when
How to pay the least
Fix your dates first
Lowfare seats are tied to one departure and are not refundable, so decide before you buy.
Book rail 90 days out
Vy releases Lowfare up to 90 days ahead and prices climb as seats sell on the Bergen to Myrdal leg.
Add the Flam Railway
Round trips open 120 days ahead, and a through ticket to Flam already includes the Myrdal to Flam leg.
Check the boat schedule
Norled sails once a day each way, April to October, so a same day return needs an overnight stay.
Compare the tour last
Add your train, cruise and Stegastein entries, then see whether from 311 USD for everything beats it.
